Project
ASM Pavia, an Italian utility company, decided to install a trigeneration system (also referred to as CCHP: combined cooling, heating, and power generation) in their premises as a pilot plant. ASM Pavia chose a micro turbine system matched with a YAZAKI water-fired chiller. The installation was commissioned in May 2004.
Task
The used micro gas turbine, equipped with a heat recovery unit, is able to supply base load power. This delivers substantial savings in fuel costs, thanks to its ability to supply waste thermal energy to other house loads. The heat recovered provides hot water that is connected directly to the facility systems. The hot water can be alternatively utilised to fire the YAZAKI WFC for air-conditioning the premises.
Solution
Power centre consisting of:
- 1 Capstone C60 MicroTurbineSystem (60 kWel / Up to 115 kWth)
- 1 YAZAKI WFC SC 20
The YAZAKI Water Fired chiller runs on the thermal energy contained in recycled hot water. Electricity is used only to run the auxiliary control, fluid circulation, and heat exhaust appliances. The result: a drastic cut in fuel costs. The robust YAZAKI chiller is designed for outdoor installation, so a utility room to house the refrigeration plant is not required.
Technical data of the installed YAZAKI absorption refrigerator
- 1 YAZAKI Li-Br absorption chiller, type WFC-SC 20
- 70 kW refrigeration output
- Hot water: 88 to 83 °C (inflow min. 70 °C / max. 95 °C)
- Volume flow rate varying between 20 and 100 %
- Cold water: 12.5 to 7 °C (outflow min. 5.5 °C)
- Cooling water: 31 to 35 °C
- COP: 0.7
