Volks- und Raiffeisenbank Finance Centre Schweinfurt, Germany

Project

Conversion of a furniture store into the finance centre of the Volks- und Raiffeisenbank Schweinfurt-Land bank in Sennfeld, Germany. The addition of 20 cm of thermal insulation to the existing exterior walls and triple-pane insulated windows reduced the net interior heating requirement (after taking heating loads such as lighting and computers into account) to just 12 - 15 W/m².  Further energy efficiency-related measures such as high-efficiency solar protection, daylight irradiation, need-based lighting and energy-saving office communications technology made it possible to reduce the cooling load to 20 - 25 W/m².

Task

The main objective of the project was to size the owner's requested tri generation plant (CCHP) in a way that extends the annual operating times of the cogeneration unit as long as possible. The system was designed to use the heat extracted both for heating purposes and for the thermal generation of cooling via an absorption chiller to cover the basic load. This required the use of a ventilation unit with a heat pump function to handle peak loads in both the heating and the cooling application.

Solution

  • Installation of a modular cogeneration unit, 5 - 20 kW electrical power output, 10 - 40 kW thermal output
  • Installation of an absorption chiller, Yazaki model WFC-SC 10 with 35 kW rated refrigeration output
  • The absorption chiller is cooled by means of a free cooler with adiabatic humidification (dual-function cooling tower for the absorption chiller and the free cooler), resulting in free cooling potential of approximately 6,500 hours/year
  • Ventilation unit with high-efficiency heat recovery (80 - 89 %) with additional adiabatic exhaust humidification and switchable heat pump with direct evaporation
  • Compensation of brief heat and cooling output shortfalls by means of heating and cooling buffer reservoirs, additional control functions (pre-cooling of conference rooms, reduction of air volumes in offices during events in the conference area)
  • Generously sized heating and cooling surfaces for better use of free cooling
